Is it possible to use ContactsLaw without installing Microsoft SharePoint on the application server?

Note: The information below does not apply to deployments where the document library is hosted remotely or in the cloud. In such scenarios, the term "application server" is taken to include the hosting environment.

Background: ContactsLaw's document management features are designed to run on top of Microsoft SharePoint, which manages storage, access control, versioning and check-in/check-out functionality. As such, all typical installations of ContactsLaw would include a copy of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. However, as an enterprise content management solution, SharePoint requires large amounts of memory, storage space and processing power. For single-user and specialist installations, this may not be practical or desirable.

Yes, it is possible to use ContactsLaw without installing Microsoft SharePoint on the server. The alternative is to configure ContactsLaw to use the "File system" plug-in.

For installations with multiple users and/or large numbers of documents, you should strongly consider using Microsoft SharePoint instead.

Requirements

  • A shared folder must be created on the server, with read/write permissions granted to all users of ContactsLaw.
  • The 'Windows Search Service' feature must be installed on the server. You must add the shared folder to the list of indexed locations.

Configuration

  • Server - The UNC path (no trailing backslash) to the shared folder on the server. Leave the Port field empty.
  • Library name - The name of a subfolder that will contain the documents in the main library. You must create this folder if it does not exist.
  • Options - The recycle bin feature is not supported when using this method, so it must not be enabled.

It is not advisable to configure a long-term document archive using this method.

Limited functionality

When using this method, many features will be unavailable; however, you will still be able to search, create, register, read and edit documents.

The following features cannot be used:

  • Check-in/check-out - These commands will have no effect. All changes made to documents will take effect immediately and cannot be undone.
  • Version history - Previous versions will not appear in the list. Importing a new version will replace the current version of the document.
  • Recycle bin
